As search engines crawl through cyberspace storing multitudes of data into their database (known as indexing), anyone can search for anything on the Internet and be able to find what they are looking for. When a user searches for a topic of interest, the search engine will search its database for a match, and once a match is found, the user will land on a results page listing websites that best matches the search criteria.
Of course, the best position to be is on the first page of all the results pages. A few users will go to the second page, if at all.
How does one get indexed by this computer program known as crawlers, spiders, indexers, or bots?
1. You can design an SEO (search engine optimized) friendly website and patiently wait for the "spiders" to crawl the web and find your site on their own. This method is the most preferred and least costly. However, unless you are an expert marketing agent, you may need to invest in SEO books and guides to learn the ins and outs of creating a search engine optimized website. This would be a worthwhile investment because once you learn the SEO techniques for one website, you can apply the same strategies to subsequent websites.
2. You can manually submit your website to the search engine’s index, or if you prefer, there are software products you can purchase that will do this for you.
3. You can pay a fee which guarantees being included on the first few pages of the search results. This method is known as pay per click (PPC) advertising and could be very costly.
Once your website has been indexed, search engines use algorithms to check for relevancy of information on your site to what the user is searching for. It also checks for overuse of keywords to ensure that your website is not a spam site, and analyzes how web pages link to one another which helps them to determine the popularity of your site. Therefore, search engines rely heavily on algorithms to determine page ranking.
The most used search engines that browse the web for your precious keywords are Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Ask.com, and AltaVista, just to name a few.
